What to tell dispatch
Give the address, what you see and what you have already shut off. If water is still running, shut off the main valve first and then call. If the problem is a backup, stop using the drains and say whether one fixture or every fixture is affected.
If you smell gas, leave the building on foot and call South Jersey Gas at 1-800-582-7060 or 911 before you call us. A plumber cannot work safely in a building with a gas leak until the utility has cleared it.
Verify a plumber before you hire
New Jersey master plumbers are licensed by the State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers, part of the Division of Consumer Affairs. The Division offers license verification, and you can check any plumber, including us, before letting someone into your home. We are licensed and insured, and we encourage the check.
What happens after you call
Dispatch writes down your address and the problem, tells you what to shut off if water is still moving, and books the earliest appointment that fits. You hear the price before work starts, so there is nothing to approve blind.
Plan to have someone at the property who can show us the shutoff, the fixture and any access points such as a cleanout, a crawlspace hatch or the water heater closet. In an apartment or condo, let your building manager know that a plumber is coming.
